November Jam Session

November 17th is the date for our next jam session. The first hour will be geared toward beginners and the second for more advanced players. We hope to have all instruments and levels represented.

Harvest Barn Dance

Our first barn dance was a huge success with more than 150 people in attendance. The music was hot, the dancing fun, the treats plentiful and the atmosphere truly authentic. It was such a hit that we've had several requests for MORE barn dances. So, polish your dancin' shoes and rosin up your bow. We've heard your requests and we aim to please!

Mark your calendar for Friday, November 4th to attend our Harvest Barn Dance. Everyone is invited to dance, play music or just watch from the sidelines and snack the night away. We hope you'll bring a variety of snacks, (not just sweet ones) to balance out the pot luck table. Please bring your instruments, dancing shoes and a snack to share. The fun will begin at 7:00 so plan on being right on time. Here are some very detailed directions to The Barn in Mapleton:

From Provo:
Proceed on 900 East Southbound (to the end of the road where it comes to a stop light right in front of Provost Elementary School and across the street from the Provo Cemetery).

Turn left and go to Springville (this road becomes Springville Main St.).
Go straight through Springville to the south end of town. When you pass the final stop light on 400 South get in the right lane which, in about 2 blocks, veers to the right then circles around to the left. This road will take you toward Mapleton. You will drive for about 3 miles.

Follow this road south until you see a green street sign (very small street corner sign) on the right that says 1600 South (Mapleton--not Springville). Turn left and go toward the mountain.

Turn right on 1250 E. (Nemelka Lane) "The Barn" will be a few yards down that road on the right. The barn is red and quite new looking.

From the Freeway (north or southbound):
Take exit 263 and go east (toward the bigger mountains--not the small ones to the west). This becomes 400 South in Springville. The second stop light is Springville's Main Street.

Turn right and stay in the right lane which, in about 2 blocks, veers to the right then circles around to the left.

That night the following tunes will be played to accompany the dancers. All but the swing tunes are found in the 50 Tunes Book Series. The swing tune chords are included below.

24 Groups Compete in Fiddle Fest
On October 22nd, the place to be was the Provo Arts Center where the sound of great acoustic music filled the air. Competition began at 12:00 noon with the small groups and proceeded throughout the afternoon ending with the large groups. The judges had a difficult time narrowing the field of 24 down to the following top winners in each division.

Small Group
1st - Thatcher & Olson
2nd - Cold Creek
3rd - Stars & Bars

Large Group
1st - Mason Dixon
2nd - Drowsy Maggie
3rd - Miles to Go

Following the second round of competition, Utah's premier Bluegrass band, Gift Horse, took the stage. This dynamic group is led by the talented Bill Sprunger on voice, guitar and mandolin. Their solid, energetic performance was appreciated by an enthusiastic audience.

Two guitars, a mandolin, music books, strings and CDs were given away as door prizes during the evening concert.
