Pride and Prejudice Contra Dance at the Barn

This month we’re sponsoring a special dance at the barn to celebrate Valentine’s Day. We’re calling it a Pride and Prejudice Contra Dance. Contra dancing takes place in sets. A set consists of two lines, with your partner usually across from you in the opposite line. Couples dance a series of figures, or moves, with each other and with another couple for a short time. They then repeat the same figures with another couple, and so on down the line. Picture the type of dances performed in the movie Pride and Prejudice and you’ll get the idea–just don’t expect the witty and intelligent Miss Elizabeth Bennett with her “fine eyes” to walk through the door. You may come in costume if you’d like, but they certainly aren’t required.

We’re very pleased to announce that Susanne Davis will be the caller for the evening. Susanne is a professor and Administrator for the World Dance Division within the Dance Department at BYU. She recently returned from doing dance research in England, Ireland and Scotland. From her findings she has published an abstract, written a paper and presented an American Contra Dance Workshop at the 4th Annual International Convention of Arts and Humanities in Oahu, Hawaii. We’re lucky to learn from her expertise and talent.

The dance will be held Friday, February 9th from 7:00-9:00 at The Barn in Mapleton. We’re encouraging this event for those 12 years old and over. The Contra dances are a little more difficult than our usual fare and not as suitable for little ones. However, don’t let that description scare those 12 and older away. This dance will be a lot of fun.

Please bring a snack to share with your fellow dancers and musicians. We especially want to thank our hosts, Karen and Kelley Thueson, for allowing us the use of their wonderful facility each month. Their barn and its location provide a great setting for dancing and traditional music. Click here for directions

Spring Fiddle Fest On the Horizon

We’re excited to announce the Spring Fiddle Fest will be held April 14, at the Tahitian Noni Auditorium at Riverwoods in Provo. Unlike the Fall Fiddle Fest, this event is not a competition so you won’t need to pay an entry fee or fill out a registration form. Groups of all sizes and levels are invited to perform three tunes on stage, starting at noon. To reserve your performance slot, please contact Sheri Cluff at (801) 471-7008. This is a great opportunity to gain some performance experience and have some fun at the same time. Pizza parties will be awarded hourly to the performer or band which generates the greatest audience response.

That evening a concert featuring four winning bands from the Fall Fiddle Fest will entertain the crowd. The concert will begin at 7:00. Admission prices are $1.00 for the afternoon event or $5.00 for a full event pass. A family ticket can be purchased for $25.00.

Performing Opportunities

If anyone is interested in performing at Courtyard at Jamestown, a retirement center, please contact Laurie Smith at 377-3730. Our family has done this before and throughly enjoyed the experience of associating with these lovely people.

Another performance opportunity is with the Santaquin Senior Citizens group. They meet at lunchtime on Fridays. If interested, please contact Claudia Peterson at 754-5310.
