Klezmer Barn Dance This Friday

The Barn in MapletonThe February Barn Dance will be held Friday, February 6th from 7:00-9:00 at The Barn in Mapleton. We’re excited to have the band KlezMore provide the music and dance instruction for the evening. Originally, the word "klezmer", from the Yiddish language, meant simply "musician". However, it has come to characterize the style of secular music played by Ashkenazi Jews for joyful celebrations such as weddings. Think of the celebration scenes from the musical “Fiddler on the Roof” and you’ll have an idea of the music and dance you’ll experience on Friday night.

Often, a klezmer band will include a fiddle, bass or cello, clarinet, drum and accordion. Klezmer music is made for dancing. Most dances which are intended to go along with klezmer music are set dances, much like the Anglo square or contra dances. However, many don’t require a partner, just holding hands with the person next to you as you weave in and out of circles and lines. We provide the water and ask that you bring a snack to share. If your New Year’s resolution included getting more exercise, trying something new or simply having more fun, come join us at The Barn! Wine glasses for crushing underfoot optional–just kidding! Our hosts may not invite us back if we do.
